In the April 4, 2024, edition of Nor’west News, our recent initiative to support vulnerable individuals through the Zonta ‘Safelet’ fundraiser was highlighted.
When retired Bishopdale resident Ann North found herself recently widowed, she sought additional safety and support. She chose a safety bracelet/watch that detects falls, monitors heart rate, activates a discreet alarm, and allows quick contact with emergency contacts. “This gives my family peace of mind,” Ann shared, emphasizing the convenience of no ongoing monthly payments.
Ann, a dedicated member of the Zonta Club of Christchurch-Canterbury for 26 years, spearheaded a fundraiser that successfully raised over $19,000 to purchase 48 HaloGuard wearable SOS alarms. These devices are set to be donated to those in need through the Christchurch Aunties, a family violence support network.
Each year, the Zonta Club selects a charity to support through various fundraising events. In 2023, the club chose the Christchurch Aunties, inspired by a speaker who highlighted the positive impact these bracelets could have on women’s safety in the community.
The funds were raised through events like a handbag sale, a winter Christmas house trail, and an auction. The bracelet includes access to the HaloGuard app, which sends an alarm with the person’s location and live audio to their emergency contacts.
Sharron Jones, the founder of HaloGuard, emphasized the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency. She explained that the device provides a connection and care circle for women, workers, and those in vulnerable situations.
The Aunties will receive these devices, which include a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, a charger, and three years of full access to the HaloGuard apps, valued at $499 each. The presentation will be made by HaloGuard technical support, Polly Genet, to Aunties board members Bernie McCarthy and Lisa Tau.
